OIC - Pull data using BIP Report into Data Management with Substitution variables

How to pull data using BIP Report into Data Management with Substitution variables

  • Go to Data Exchange > Applications, Select Data Source and Select EPM(Custom)
  • In File, select BIP Report file which you are going to pull data. This column structure we need to pull data in to the system correctly.
  • Update Report details as shown below: Select ERP connection Name.
  • Select Execution Method as BIP Report and Report name along with Path
  • Parameter List, if not mentioned any, select unique in the columns like Period=Jan or dummy column with Y like shown below.

BIP Report
If we are planning to execute report data load like Jan-26, which we are going to load that using Data Management, we can mention below as an argument to pick up Period from POV of the Data load Rule.

argument1=$START_PERIODKEY[MMM-YY]$;

If we are planning to use Substitution variables to pass through arguments like above method, it will not work. Because this report is going to connect to ERP, but our variable needs to pick from EPM.

In case of using substitution variable in OIC to execute dataload rule, OIC will pick substitution variable from EPM to execute Data load rule, which will pass same to BIP Report also. In this case substitution variable will work.

Generally, to bring substitution variables from EPM Planning application to OIC to run the Data load Rule with that period we can use as below:
'{&CurrentMonth#&CurrentYear}'

Oracle EPM Data Management Error Troubleshooting – How to Find and Fix Data Load Errors

Tips and Suggestions on Data Management Errors

When working with Oracle EPM Data Management, troubleshooting data load errors can sometimes be confusing. An error may appear during import, validation, mapping, or data export, and it is not always immediately clear where to start looking.

While working with Oracle EPM Data Management, I have encountered several of these situations. I am documenting some of the common issues and troubleshooting steps here for future reference and to help others facing similar problems.

1. Start with Process Details

Whenever a Data Management process fails or completes with errors, one of the first places I check is Process Details.

After the process completes, review the process information and log to understand where the failure occurred.

The log can help identify whether the problem happened during:

  • Data import
  • Validation
  • Mapping
  • Period processing
  • Data load or export

Instead of immediately changing mappings or other settings, first check the process log carefully. In many cases, the error message provides an indication of where the problem is occurring.

2. Currency Dimension Error Showing [None]

One issue you may encounter during a data load is an error related to the Currency dimension, where the value appears as:

[None]

If this happens, check the Location being used for the data load and verify the selected Import Format.

In my case, the issue was related to [None] being used with the functional currency.

Review the Import Format and currency configuration and remove or correct the [None] value associated with the functional currency where applicable.

After correcting the configuration, run the data load again and verify the Process Details log.

3. Invalid Period Error in Data Management

Another common issue is an Invalid Period error.

When this occurs, check the Period Mapping.

The error can occur when Oracle EPM Data Management is unable to match the period coming from the input file or source system with the periods configured in Data Management.

When troubleshooting this issue, compare:

  • The period coming from the source or input file
  • The period format
  • The Period Mapping configured in Data Management

Even a difference in the expected date or period format can prevent the system from matching the period correctly.

4. Period Mapping Import and Excel Date Format Problems

Another issue can occur when exporting and importing Period Mappings.

When the exported file is opened or edited in Microsoft Excel, Excel may automatically change the date into a different date format or convert it into its internal numeric date format.

As a result, the period format in the file may no longer match the format expected by Data Management.

Before importing the Period Mapping file again, check the date values carefully.

If Excel has changed the format, use the Custom formatting option in Excel and set the value back to the date format required by Data Management.

Save the corrected file and then import the Period Mappings again.

Tip: Always check the period/date columns after opening mapping files in Excel. Automatic Excel formatting can create problems even when the original exported file was correct.

5. Use Explicit Period When the Period Comes from the File

In some integrations, the period is provided directly in the source file.

In this situation, you can use the Explicit Period option under Source Mapping.

This allows Data Management to pick the period from the source file and match it against the configured Period Mapping.

When using Explicit Period, make sure that:

  • The source file contains the expected period value
  • The period format is correct
  • A corresponding Period Mapping exists
  • The source mapping is configured correctly

If any of these values do not match, the data load may result in an Invalid Period or period mapping error.

Oracle EPM Data Management Troubleshooting Checklist

When a Data Management process fails, I normally recommend checking the issue in this order:

  1. Check Process Details
  2. Review the process/error log
  3. Identify the stage where the process failed
  4. Verify the Location and Import Format
  5. Check dimension mappings
  6. Verify Period Mapping
  7. Check the source file's period/date format
  8. Check whether Explicit Period should be used
  9. Correct the configuration and run the process again
  10. Review Process Details to confirm that the issue has been resolved

Final Thoughts

Oracle EPM Data Management errors can sometimes look complicated, but checking the process step by step usually makes troubleshooting easier.

The Process Details log is a good starting point. From there, check the Import Format, mappings, period configuration, and source file based on the error being reported.

I will continue adding more Oracle EPM Data Management errors and solutions to this article as I encounter them in real-world environments.

If you are working with Oracle EPM, PBCS, Data Management, or Data Integration, I hope these troubleshooting notes help you identify issues more quickly.

Thanks,
Mady

EPM - How to load Attributes in to PBCS application

How to load Attributes in to PBCS application

To load Attributes, prepare file like this.

Employee Number1, Alias, Permanent, Monthly

Employee Number2, Alias, contract, Hourly

Here 3rd, and 4th columns are attributes, which i am going to load along with Emp numbers and Alias metadata using Data Management/Data Exchange.

While creating application, select Dimensions and If needed use prefix.

As it will create dimensions, if you are going to load Custom dimension, select Custom and add Attribute name (Parent member of the attributes which you created in application) and assign UD1/2/3 depends on the no.of the Attributes columns you are loading.

So, create import format, where select Source and Target Dimensions and Attributes.

Note: Few you are getting blanks for few attributes, then generally we will write SQL in mapping, to ignore blanks, but here is the catch. If you ignore Attribute it will ignore that complete line. That means metadata also will not build. so, if you want to use to load metadata along with attributes, you must need one member in Attribute to assign for blanks in attribute list. Attribute will not duplicates also, so, if you want to use like NoAttribute1, and NoAttribute2 etc.

While loading metadata, you can ignore blanks not metadata members, so above tip will be helpful.

Load and Test once it's completed...!!

EPM DM - BIP Report as a Source to EPBCS

EPM DM - BIP Report as a Source to EPBCS

As part of data loading we can pull data from different source systems. Using Data Source option, we can pull directly BIP report from Fusion application.

  • Create Source application with Oracle Cloud ERP(Custom), here we are creating source for workforce data. We need to upload and browse for the Report template, to get source columns as members of Source application.
BIP Report
  • Go to option, where we need to update Fusion application, fill other parameters as per report requirement.

  • Create an import format with Source and Target(EPBCS), map dimensions of source and target.
  • Try to import data and check are we getting data or not. In case of any issue in pulling data, check Report permissions in ERP.
